I would first like to apologize for my lack of posting.  I have taken up my second job which has taken up most of my evenings; perils of being an underpaid college student.  I have become a workaholic to the point where I have started to wish there were more hours in a day,  though I would just be working more so that wouldn’t help.  But hey, working hard all week puts the beer on the table right?  Plus, I paid a visit to the QVC sample sale today.  A magical place that while not food related, is wallet friendly.  When Bobbi Brown makeup is only $5 you can’t afford not to go.  Thank God my Tax Return is coming soon.  Though I have to admit, I felt like a wimpy geek in a weight room when my sister informed me that she made more in 6 months than I did in a year.  On twiter they call that #epicfail; and now you all know why I write this blog and have sampled a plethora of affordable bottles of wine.

Today’s gem Como Sur (Southern Cone) hails from Chile and is ochenta y ocho puntas. That’s 88 points for all you non Spanish  speakers.  It is my first tango with a Chilean, wine and it is a perfect ten.  I normally stay away from foreign wines, for some odd reason I always thought they were more expensive, but after a delicious glass enjoyed with this evenings dinner I decided to give it a whirl.  I was pleasantly surprised, and slightly more excited than I should have been, to find a bottle that was $8 and 88 points.  That’s like finding a pair Jimmy Choo’s for 90 percent off.

Perhaps more surprising than the price is the flavor, a nice fruity body and only a hint of grassy herbaciousness.  I am not sure why people find grassy wine pleasant any way, it’s not like any one actually eats grass unless you are 8 years old and sitting cross legged in the middle of the outfield playing softball.  At first you taste the subtle bite of citrus fruit, just enough to make your lips pucker with a coy sweetness, which gives way to a delicate floral note.   To be honest, I have not had many wines that have a floral body, usually it is just in the nose.  That’s about as rare as a reindeer with a red nose, and no I do not go around eating flowers for those of you wondering how I know what they taste like.   All in all this is a very full bodied white wine, and is a great buy for anyone (not just us poor folk).
